Diverticular Disease

Diverticular disease (or diverticulosis) is a common condition affecting the bowel. It consists of out-pouchings in the wall of the bowel due to minor weaknesses and 'wear and tear'. In most people it will cause no problems however it can cause bleeding or infection (diverticulitis) resulting in pain and altered bowel habit and which may need treatment. The symtoms of diverticular disease are not dissimilar to that of bowel cancer and it is often discovered incidentally in tests to exclude bowel cancer.
