Constipation may refer to either passing particular hard stools (bowel movements) or particularly infrequent ones. We all may get constipated from time to time due to changes in diet, fluid intake, activity levels and medication. Often simple measures like increasing the intake of fibre (roughage) in the diet, increasing the amount of fluid you drink and exercise may help. Sometimes laxatives may be required to ease the problem. A prolonged change in bowel habit may be a sign of something more serious and should be investigated further.
