Anal Fissure

An anal fissure is a split in the lining of the back passage area. This area has a plentiful nerve supply and fissures are often exquisitely painful when opening the bowels, often associated with some fresh blood from the back passage. Patients will often say that they try not to open their bowels because of the pain. These are a common condition that is almost always harmless and responds well to a variety of non-surgical and surgical treatments.
