Common Symptoms

Bowel symptoms are common and many be part of various disease processes.

 

Anal Symptoms

  • Bleeding, usually bright
  • Mucous
  • Pruritus (itching)
  • Pain,
  • Soiling,
  • Incontinence
  • Lumps

 

Rectal Symptoms

  • Bleeding, bright or dark
  • Mucous
  • Feeling of incomplete evacuation
  • Straining
  • Supporting the pelvis when defaecating
  • Using the finger to help evacuation
  • Urgency – the need to open the bowel now to prevent incontinence

 

Colonic Symptoms

  • Bleeding, usually dark
  • Diarrhoea, watery or frequent
  • Bloody diarrhoea, with mucous
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain – usually gripey
  • Change in bowel habit

 

General Symptoms

  • Anaemia (tiredness, fatigue, shortness of breadth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
